AZW and AZW3 ebooks are available to purchase from the Amazon Kindle Store. Because it’s Amazon’s proprietary format, AZW files will not open with most other ereaders, but you may be able to open them with Calibre’s ebook software.
However, AZW files should still be readable on most newer Kindles, and you can also download the Kindle app for smartphones, tablets, PCs and Macs. In 2011, Amazon introduced the newer AZW3 format which has more functionality than AZW. DRM is intended to stop users from copying and sharing whole books or sections with other users. Like the earlier MOBI files, AZW files are normally protected by digital rights management (DRM) technology. The files can contain interactive contents pages and book navigation, as well as the main content of the book and basic graphics. AZW is sometimes known as the Kindle File Format. The AZW ebook format was created by Amazon to use with its Kindle ereaders.
